Monks and the mountain This small community is as typical of the Khmer way of life as you are likely to find. A poor community with little by way of employment, save for farming, yet a community with spirit, kindness and hope for a better future. Traditional stilted houses line the river with their colourful boats moored alongside. Children swim and play. They will smile and wave, especially if you make the effort first. Unlike many places, you can explore this village not as a ‘tour’ that does little to encourage interaction between locals and travellers, but simply as an individual keen to experience life as it really is for the Khmer people.
