The Local CommunityThe local community benefits from gifts to the school in Tatai donated by Rainbow Lodge and its guests.
Major improvements, funded partly by the "Tatai Village Fund", which is financed from our treks, were undertaken at the school in July 2010. Improvements included making swings, repainting classrooms (adding murals and posters) and making and providing equipment for a basketball/volleyball court. A new fund has been set up to provide the school with its first computers and solar power. Watch this space! The ChildrenRainbow Lodge has been a proud supporter of the Rainbow Foundation orphanage in Sihanoukville. A bring-and-buy book stall at Rainbow Lodge was used to raise cash, which was used, along with other generally collected donations, to purchase specific items needed by the orphanage. These have ranged from the simple toothbrush to chairs for lesson times (which include local children that cannot afford to go to school) and a lockable filing cabinet for all private papers of the orphanage. After donating approximately $600 to the orphanage, Rainbow Lodge is now switching its charitable donations to more local needs.

The EnvironmentRainbow Lodge organised a clear up day at the local beauty spot, Tatai waterfall. Local children were given a small sum of money for each dustbin bag full of rubbish they collected and a BBQ lunch was provided for all. A great success for everybody involved. Some success has been achieved there with money from the Tatai Village fund, which has been used to buils a toilet block, provide rubbish bins and collection at the waterfall, but more still needs to be done. A presentation by UK teenagers at the school addressed the need to clear up rubbish in the village. The presentation was followed by "all hands on deck", clearing the school and surrounding area. Books and dustbins funded by Rainbow Lodge and its guests were provided to reinforce this message, along with a "Tidy Up Tatai" T-shirt for each participant. Rainbow Lodge is working with the local community and government bodies to get organised litter clearing in Tatai and at the waterfall. In the meantime, Rainbow Lodge has donated dustbins to local small business, selling goods near the bridge, and takes the bins away to be emptied. Rainbow Lodge has also supplied some bins under the bridge for general public use. The good news is that they are actually being used! |
The NeedyGuests are encouraged to leave any unwanted items of clothing or shoes which are then distributed to those in need. Unwanted items from Rainbow Lodge, such as mattresses, are also given to people in the village. |
